MLC: Core Location Platform
See what's new in the latest GeoLENs MLC release

GeoLENs core location platform
The wide variety of wireless environments and location needs have caused the industry to define an assortment of location system node types. These include GMLC, SMLC, E-SMLC, SAS, and SLP . Each node type can apply unique capabilities in order to address specific applications and environments. Understanding which location system node type(s) you need can get complicated. Andrew makes it simple.
GeoLENs MLC is everything you need.
The GeoLENs MLC (Mobile Location Center) is equipped with virtual node technology, so it consolidates all the capabilities of the various location node servers into a single-bay solution that is flexible, powerful, and scalable. The result is a system capable of handling all location requirements across the network, regardless of that network's configuration.
The GeoLENs MLC supports multiple combinations of handset-based, network-based, and hybrid locating technologies and can be configured based on operator needs.
Integrated policy server
The GeoLENs MLC also offers a powerful and integrated policy server on the SLP hardware platform. The added functionality enables operators to control the types of applications and devices that can access location information and helps make the best use of the available bandwidth.
High capacity throughput:
The GeoLENs MLC processes up to 1,000 MLP transactions per second, as many as 600 SUPL transactions per second, and up to 1,000 control plane transactions per second. It also minimizes location traffic by allowing location-based applications to bundle up to 100 discreet subscriber location requests in a single message.
Precision when it matters most
With a unique E9-1-1 Smart Virtual Device GPS Cache, the GeoLENs MLC improves A-GPS yield regardless of the mobile device. The GPS cache stores A-GPS fixes and can provide them to the PSAP in place of a more recent lower-accuracy fix. The system's E9-1-1 Initial Position Optimization replaces the initial coarse location with a more recent higher-accuracy fix.
System reporting and monitoring
Enhanced OAM (Operations, Administration, and Management) functions provide extended event records for richer historical and statistical analysis, deeper diagnostic data for improved SUPL transaction analysis, and greater operational security and data management capabilities. The GeoLENs MLC also supports a native location query tool that can be invoked directly from the platform.
Infrastructure sharing support
With the release of GeoLENs MLC 10.1, a single SAS platform node can now support multiple operators. So it enables a single wireless operator to reduce CAPEX and OPEX cost without sacrificing functionality or performance.
Scalable network coverage
GeoLENs MLC is scalable, supporting any size network up to 2 million cells. It is perfectly suited for operators whose network footprint continues to grow, as well as networks who are deploying an increasingly larger number of femto cells.
The bottom line is a stronger bottom line.
The ability to consolidate all your location servers into a single footprint; added functionality that allows you to drive more revenue into your network; the capability to handle any location request within your network, regardless of the capabilities of the specific mobile device. From enhanced service to greater OPEX and CAPEX savings, the bottom line of the GeoLENs MLC is, well, a much stronger bottom line.

GMLC (Gateway Mobile Location Center)
The GMLC is the first node an external location services client accesses in a GSM or UMTS network. It is responsible for sending location requests to the network and relaying coordinates to the location services client.
- Controls and authenticates requests for a subscribers location from applications
- Coordinates transformation of position information into latitude and longitude that is handed off to an application or PSAP
- Interfaces to MSC and HLR to query for Cell ID positioning, allowing for cost-effective low accuracy solution
- Interfaces to Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) or other Emergency/Public Safety Authorities for E9-1-1, E-1-12, etc.
- Supports standards-based interfaces
- 3GPP/GSM Lb interface
- Mobile Location Protocol (MLP) for location services and European E1-1-2 emergency interface
- J-STD-036 for E9-1-1 Phase 2 in the U.S.
- Can be combined with SMLC, SAS, SLP, etc. on single equipment platform
SMLC (Serving Mobile Location Center)
The SMLC is responsible for calculating network-based locations of mobile handsets in a GSM network and then relaying that information to the GMLC. The SMLC may or may not interact with one or more LMUs (Location Measurement Units) to obtain positioning information.
- Provides overall positioning coordination, and interacts with MS, MSC, BSC and various positioning methodologies when necessary
- Control Plane Location
- Triggers A-GPS measurements for higher accuracy and interfaces to A-GPS Reference Network data feed
- Supports MS-Based and MS-Assisted A-GPS for GSM/GPRS/EDGE, iDEN
- Applies handset-based and network-based locating methods including A-GPS, Timing Advance/Network Measurement Reports, Cell/Sector ID
- Interfaces with operator network to extract measurement data required for position calculation processes
- Can be combined with GMLC, SAS, SLP, etc. on single equipment platform
E-SMLC (Enhanced Serving Mobile Location Center)
The E-SMLC provides the centralized serving location calculation platform for the evolved UTRAN in LTE.
- 3GPP compliant SLs interface support
- Supporting enhanced cell, time-of-arrival, and UE-based and UE-assisted A-GPS location determination technologies as standards emerge.
- It will be supportable as a software upgrade on existing Gen4 MLC deployments
- The E-SMLC can co-reside on the MLC with SAS, SMLC, and GMLC functionality
SAS (Stand Alone Serving Mobile Location Center)
SLP (Secure User Plane Location Platform)
The SLP is an independent and highly affordable user-plane solution that enables any mobile or wireless device to access location information regardless of the location server used by the operator.
- Integrates quickly and easily with your network, providing an immediate and high-accuracy locating solution.
- Able to use a variety of positioning technologies to locate any SET (SUPL-Enabled Terminal) device.
- Can be deployed in GERAN (2G), UTRAN (3G), and LTE (4G) environments.
- Fully compliant with current Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) SUPL standards.
